Looking For Great Walks and Hikes In Dordogne

One of the premier locales to visit in France is Dordogne. This southwest region is one of the most compelling of places to enjoy. Whether you are looking for gites, or you’re looking to spend a holiday near the rich history of small villages, you’ll find that this is a locale not to miss. If you’re not looking to be around a lot of tourists, and would like to seek out something new, consider Dordogne as your main destination. Now, once there, you may want to venture out on foot, and that’s where things really start to come alive.

This region is known for historical context. From castles, to natural wonders, you’re not going to find another locale that has so much to explore on foot. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or you’re new to globe trekking, there’s a lot to consider when it comes to this area. With that in mind, consider the following options that should help you get moving forward when you’re ready to take a walk.

Before You Venture Forward

Before you take on any walks and hikes in the Dordogne region, make sure that you’re prepared. If you’re traveling with children, look for easier routes than you would normally. If you’re adventurous, seek out a variety of options that range in skill level, distance, and more. Always pack good walking shoes, and a day pack, as well as maps and emergency elements. You never know what you’ll encounter, and while these aren’t going to be treacherous, it’s best to be safe. Just keep that in mind as you book any travel and decide to go off the beaten path.

Ferme de Tayac As A Starting Point

In order to go through marked trails, you’ll need a starting point. That’s where Ferme de Tayac starts. If you find yourself wanting to go on the beaten path, this is the first stage that you will want to look into. There are several options in this starting point.

Route of Prehistory

Two different options will come through with this starting line. First is simple, you can take on a 5 KM route which is considered “Route of Prehistory”, and look at spots that go back to the Cro-Magnon era. You can take a short hike of 5 kilometers if you’re not going to go extreme. However, if you want to walk longer, and make a loop, then by all means consider the 12 kilometer option, which is definitely a bit more difficult.

La Mouthe

If you don’t have a lot of time, then take this option for 2 hours of walking to a vantage point of medieval times. You can see the ruins of La Mouthe here, and you will absolutely see amazing views here. This may be a bit off the beaten path to some, but it’s not a complex walk, so you don’t have to worry about getting stranded. It’s a 2-hour loop and you head through Les Ezyies.

The Medeleine

If you want to take on a long quest, roughly 6 hours or so, then this is for you. This is one of the longer trails and you will get up close and personal with nature on this one. You will get views of the Vezere Valley with this trail, and it’s not for children. It’s a solid 6 hours or so, and you’re going to be trekking through some natural splendor, along ancient pathways that are nothing short of stunning. It’s a great opportunity to get the experienced trekker a bit of fun, no doubt.

Finding The Best Options

If you’re not sure where to go or how to get there, don’t panic. You can book hiking and walking tours through various groups. You could book a full trip that will encompass all hiking and trekking throughout Dordogne and beyond. Of course, you’ll want to consider the skill level that you and your family or friends have, as some of these tours are not for those that aren’t very active. Some treks, as mentioned above, could take on 6 or more hours to loop through, and some are on the unbeaten path. Some involve climbing too, and that can be tough. France holiday home chateaux

In order to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your trip, take time to look for guides, and booking options that will help you get to locales of great hiking and walking alike. The above are some options that are available, but when in doubt, get a guide so that you’re not lost through this natural wonderland.
